Departing from our capital, Kralendijk we travel along the rustic Northern coastline first stopping at 1000 Steps. Holland funded the construction of this stairway because of its exquisite landscaping. Drive by Devil’s Mouth, a great place for photographs and folklore An iguana smilestories. Then drive past Karpata, a beautifully restored plantation residence. For many years Karpata was used as a biological institute to preserve the waters and vegetation of the island. On to Goto Lake, considered the most beautiful spot on the island by many and the best place to see the shy flamingo. You will then pass Para Mira, "Stop and Look" in Papiamento, the local language, for a view of Rincon. Rincon is the oldest settlement on the island, dating back to the sixteenth century. Here there will be a stop for refreshments before continuing on to Seru Largo for a fabulous view over Kralendijk, Klein Bonaire, and the southern part of the island.

Cactus fences line the roadJourney on through Kralendijk to the southern part of the island. In contrast to the northern part of the island, the south side is flat and home to both Cargill Salt N.V., a modern day salt company amidst the historic salt pans and the flamingos. The color contrasts are spectacular between the Caribbean Sea, pink colored salt pans, snow white salt mounds and crystal clear skies. Next visit the stone Slave Huts which served as shelters for the slaves who worked in the salt pans.
